This Narrative Writing Unit is a step-by-step guided approach designed for whole class use to support your most reluctant writers to your most prolific.
Many students begin to write fictional narratives at a very early age perhaps due to their exposure to fairy tales. Their imaginative stories contain some interesting characters but often fall flat due to a lack of a plot line. Even older students, with all their creative ideas, fall short for the same reason. How many narratives have your read that seem to just never end or fizzle out?
A narrative, in fact, is a highly structured text form that follows a predetermined path; from simple fairy tales to the vast majority of Hollywood scripts, this format is followed. I’ve distilled the model down to the basic components so all of your students will have a complete narrative short story draft with all of the essential components at the end of the process that can then be edited for improvements to vocabulary, clarity, etc. before publishing.
How it Works:
Each step of the process in completed in individual stages so that the story’s setting, characters, and plot points are determined first on a graphic organizer before students even begin writing. I find that this method supports your most reluctant writers by breaking down the task into smaller “chunks”. I find it is just as valuable for my most prolific writers as it helps them to organize their many ideas into a manageable format that is essential for a successful narrative.
