This is a set of 4 writing assignments that I use with my fifth graders for narrative writing. They are designed for kids who never know what to write about. Each assignment sheet consists of 3 columns that kids can mix-and-match to find the elements of a story. One grid involves selecting fairy tale characters/setting/problem, and the other three include character/problem/ending choices.
I have also included an organizer and a scoring rubric that could be used for any of the prompts. I score each story with two grades-- one for the story development and the other for conventions (mechanics).
I have found these grids to be very motivational for my reluctant writers, and I will often model one combination as a sample to get the kids writing. We've been focused on how to write a good ending, hence the focus on endings on several of the grids.
