By the time students are in middle school, it is likely that they will have already experienced SEVERAL narrative writing units. I like to make my middle school writers responsible for their own writing by starting off with a seed journal and a set of narrative writing task cards. Each student gets a set of narrative writing task cards and is
asked to respond to a prompt of their choosing once a week (you can alter that to fit your own writing schedule). Once students have
responded to a sufficient number of prompts, they are ready to write their narratives.
