Description

Use this resource that includes 5 narrative writing prompts to help address the Common Core State Standard for Narrative Writing in Grade 3 (W.3.3). Students respond to a narrative writing prompt based on a well-known fairy tale using one of the fairy tale characters and their traits.

HOW IT WORKS
In this resource, students are presented with a prompt about a character from a fairy tale. The teacher uses the included mini-lessons to address all the components of the narrative writing prompt, which include:

  • describing the setting
  • examining character traits
  • establishing a problem/solution plot outline
  • writing dialogue
  • showing NOT telling description

Once the prompt components are taught and practiced, the student begins drafting the narrative. Students can publish on themed final draft writing paper when all revisions and editing is done.
