This unit inspires students to use classic literature as models for their own narrative writing. Published in 1902, Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories
tell how the camel got its hump, how the armadillo got its scales, how the elephant got its trunk, and more.
Students read three of Kipling’s original fables, which are included. They analyze the stories’ genres and perspectives, explore the ways that repetition can be used effectively, examine voice and word choice, and take a look at character development.
After analyzing Kipling’s writing, students use what they’ve learned to plan and write their own Just So narratives (pourquoi tales).
