Narrative writing has changed quite a bit with the Common Core Standards. The following lesson provides an in depth approach to teaching narrative writing in the 6-8th grade band. Students will be creating a memoir based on a moment from their own lives. They will also be reading and interacting with various narrations to give them a broad example of what narratives are. Reading material, worksheets, rubrics, narrative examples, and pictures are all provided. Students will be learning to focus in on the moment through sensory details, discovering essential background information, and establishing a clear theme. Students will be analyzing various narratives and reading literature texts until they are clear on what is important in creating their own personal narratives. Students will take their work completely through the writing process including brainstorming, plotting out their narrative, peer review with peer reviewing guides, revision, and publishing. The lessons are broken into five separate parts allowing for time to rework and revise. This lesson aligns exactly with the Common Core and includes readings from the actual Core.
