"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave"
These documents include a portion of the text of Chapter X from Frederick Douglass' "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave," (which is a fair use document), a 15-question reading assessment, and an answer key.
Chapter X is sometimes called "The Battle with Mr. Covey." In this portion of the narrative, Douglass tells the story of how he turned his life as a slave around, becoming a man instead of a slave even though he was still a slave.
The documents are in Word and in PDF versions.
I use this reading assessment as a cold read during my unit on Realism. The 15 questions are a mixture of simple in-the-text-type questions and more challenging beyond-the-text questions that require higher order thinking skills.
You could use it as a test, quiz, reading assessment, homework assignment, or reading assignment.
The text is 6 pages long, the questions are 2 pages, and the answer key is 2 pages. This has 20 pages because of the Word and PDF versions, as well as the answer keys.
If you don't typically teach this story but you need an emergency lesson plan, this would help you out and work well for your substitute in a pinch.
