This t-chart sort can be used to assess students' knowledge of expository and narrative prompts. I have used this before in my fourth grade classroom as a quick way to check whether students can identify the difference between the two types of prompts. This is important, as students will have to determine the structures and tools with which to use depending on whether the prompt is narrative or expository.
This could also be extended beyond the t-chart. For instance, after having students sort the prompts, students could choose from either the expository or narrative side of the t-chart (or both) to write an essay using the appropriate structure to be graded.
This product follows 4th grade writing TEKS for the STAAR test in Texas, and can also be used in 3rd or 5th grade classrooms to review the differences with students.
