Teacher modeling is one strategy that is proven to improve the quality of writing students produce. Modeling can be challenging for teachers, so I am sharing a writing sample for you to share with your students.
When teaching narrative and memoir, I always like to model and write along with my students, as I am sure you do. With this lesson, I start by reading A Chair for my Mother by Vera Williams. Then, I share this memory. This story has evolved over time (with some input from my fifth grade students) to become what it is now.
In addition to addressing common core state standards, this exemplar addresses Virginia ELA SOLs.
Students can also look critically at this exemplar and suggest revisions. The lexile level is included so you can determine if your students can read it independently or if they need you to read it aloud.
