PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Ready to bring some creative writing into your lit unit, using the current book as the ultimate mentor text? Write a scene or short story based on the book to put your students in the role of author!

This narrative writing assignment is ready to use for any literature unit OR a student’s choice YA novel from independent reading! In this set of assignments, students have the choice to write an alternate beginning, prologue, deleted scene, rewritten POV scene, alternate ending, or an epilogue.

Writers are scaffolded by first completing a graphic organizer asking them to analyze the author’s writing style before proceeding to write their own scene emulating it. Then, use the Common Core-aligned rubric to assess the narrative with all of the W.3 sub-standards.

In addition to the generic assignment, I have also included directions pages to apply to five specific pieces of literature: The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Giver, Of Mice and Men, and A Christmas Carol. Print these pages to apply immediately to your current lit unit on these books, OR view them as examples of how you could modify the assignment to another book you’re teaching!

(As a side note, these narratives have become a huge hit in my classroom. It’s their favorite part of my Lit units. My students rose to the occasion very easily, since they were already immersed in the author’s style from reading the book and could start imitating it better than I imagined! Let your students impress you with what they can come up with – I’ve never had more fun while grading than I did while reading these!)

This EDITABLE, 10-page download includes:
• Assignment directions page
• Graphic Organizer: Analyzing an Author’s Style
• Common Core rubric: written to the rigor of the 9-12 narrative standards in W.3, but in student-friendly language that can be used in middle school, too.
• To Kill a Mockingbird: Alternate beginnings/prologues directions page
• The Great Gatsby: Rewritten scene/new POV directions page
• The Giver: Deleted scene (Memory transmission) directions page
• Of Mice and Men: Alternate ending directions page
• A Christmas Carol: Epilogue/alternate ending directions page
