Nasreen's Secret School was distinguished as a Notable Trade Book by the National Council for the Social Studies. It puts a real face on the issue of schooling for girls living in the Middle East during the time of Taliban rule. While the issues covered are sensitive and powerful, the book is written from the viewpoint of Nasreen and is thus quite accessible to students in grades 4 and beyond. The curriculum unit engages students in an understanding of the reason Nasreen was forced to go to a "secret school" and shows her love of learning. Students will engage in rich discussions, learn how to create an open-minded portrait to study Nasreen's feelings and aspirations, and through the use of the QAR strategy, they will engage in deep discussions. The unit contains all of the needed handouts as well as step-by-step implementation instructions. The unit can be completed in as few as 3 days or can be lengthened using the listed extension activities. It will be a meaningful lesson for everyone!
