This resource contains a list of primary source documents related to Nat Turner, Nat Turner's Rebellion, and the legacy of one of the most famous slave revolts in American history. This resource should be used after students have already been introduced to Nat Turner and his rebellion.
Each of source has a brief introduction, and some of the sources have been edited. Document based questions are located toward the end of the resource. The concluding element of the packet is an essay titled, "Is Nat Turner an American Hero?" in which students are asked to evaluate and assess the actions of Turner and whether his stand against slavery makes him an American hero.
In particular, this essay is a great springboard for discussing "What constitutes an American hero?"
Lesson designed for use in an 8th grade American History course in Oakland, CA, but adaptable for many classrooms.
