This worksheet includes a stunning 2-page excerpt from Nat Turner's jailhouse "Confessions" regarding the slave uprising he led in Virginia in 1831. It includes graphic details of how he and his followers went from house to house in Southampton County before he went into hiding and was eventually caught.
It includes an introduction that explains the context of the rebellion and its repercussions. Following the excerpt are 7 reading comprehension questions, most of which require the students to reflect critically about what they read. An answer key is included as well.
This is a fantastic reading as it paints a vivid image of the horrors of this rebellion and how it led to worse treatment for slaves prior to the Civil War.
