This is a five page hand out that guides students through a close reading and annotation process using Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'Wives of the Dead'.
'Wives of the Dead' is an excellent story to help readers learn the importance of close reading, annotation, and using evidence from the text to support their conclusions.
This is also an excellent lesson for test skills review!
Please note that the materials I use to teach annotation is not included in this unit. However, you can easily use the first excerpt to initiate the lesson on annotation with your students.
Lastly, when I teach this lesson, I only handout one excerpt at a time and require students get each excerpt checked by me prior to moving on. This helps the students slow down and read closely. It has worked wonderfully in my classroom.
