This 23 page unit was designed as a 4 week filler unit during a summer program. It is intended to target both ELA and Social Studies and can be amended according to the instructor's preference. During the first three weeks of the unit students will be introduced to a new country, listen to the national anthem, review unknown vocabulary, then, with guidance from the instructor, analyze the lyrical content with historical context provided by the instructor. After having analyzed the lyrics students will be able to listen to music selections from the targeted country (selections have been provided and can be accessed on YouTube, but the teacher may choose any he/she likes). The fourth and final week students will be tasked with writing their own anthem and, if time allows, creating a flag for the country they have chosen (assignment and rubric provided). * Several pages, including the map key, and the daily instructional guides are not intended to be passed out to the students.
