AUGUST IS NATIONAL BACK TO SCHOOL MONTH
At the beginning of the school year, students wonder who their teacher will be. Students will be surprised to find out how many famous people have been teachers. In this lesson, students work in pairs and search the Internet for the names of famous people who have been teachers for part of their careers. The "Figure Me Out" lesson is a math version of the popular All About Me activity for Back to School. Students use math concepts related to their lives (for example, the number of letters in their name, birthdates, number of boys/girls in their family, address where they live, etc.) to complete the activity. The finished product makes a perfect display for Back to School Night. The poetry lesson is based upon The Village School Master, a poem by
Oliver Goldsmith. Students read a biography of Goldsmith and write a poem about one of their favorite teachers.
