This is an 18 slide, highly animated, power point presentations on a National Construction Project - Building The Erie Canal. Each of the presentation slides are editable so you can change it to fit your individual needs.
During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the United States of America began to develop plans to improve transportation into the interior and beyond the great physical barrier of the Appalachian Mountains. A major goal was to link Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes with the Atlantic Coast through a canal. One of the most revolutionary canals ever built was the Erie Canal.
The Erie Canal was over 363 miles long, 28 feet wide at the top and 40 feet wide at the bottom and 4 feet deep. It connected the Hudson River and Lake Erie, took 8 years to construct and was one of the longest canals of its time. It stimulated New York’s economy tremendously. People were able to ship goods further for less money. Although the Erie Canal had its critics, it proved to be very successful.
The development of the railroad in the 19th century and the automobile in the 20th century sealed the fate of the Erie Canal. Now, the canals are primarily used for pleasure boating - bike paths, trails, and recreational marinas line the canal today.
