Description

I’ve been teaching with National Geographic’s Inside curriculum for years. The curriculum is one of my favorites, and I’ve often recommended it to others. That said, the curriculum isn’t perfect, and it does require a fair amount of supplementation, especially in the area of grammar. This document contains the lesson plans that I have developed and followed for teaching this curriculum. I’ve linked to as many of the supplemental resources as possible.

One thing that I do every day when teaching this curriculum is work one academic language. There is some academic vocabulary included with the curriculum, but it is very minor and not well developed. To supplement this, I have developed a set of units that correlate with the Inside units and academic vocabulary used in each. Each unit includes the 8 academic vocabulary words for each of the eight units. Since the curriculum repeats some words this resource also repeats some words. In my class I start each unit by working together to complete the chart and then scatter the other activities throughout the unit (each activity takes about 5-10 minutes). The assessment is given near the end of the unit, separate from the unit assessment. You can get the complete set of activities in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

The lesson plans I share here are organized by unit (only the first seven units are covered as I've never had time to teach unit eight). Each unit is broken down into days (I taught five, 45 minutes, classes a week) with the various activities and homework assignments listed. I’ve provided links to as many of the supplemental resources as possible. I have not provided a lot of details on the usage of the various materials, as we are all professionals and every class is different, but I believe there is enough here to help and inspire you.
