Summary of Explorer Magazine
To the Rescue introduces students to two kinds of rescue workers, firefighters and lighthouse keepers, and it looks at the tough jobs these everyday heroes do. In "Firestorm!" Leslie Hall explains that the U.S. has thousands of wildfires each year. Although wildfires destroy, they also clean out dead plants and allow new growth. Wildfires are growing more dangerous, though. More people live near potential fire areas. And forests are drier because of higher temperatures and less snow. Brave firefighters attack fires by digging fire lines and starting backfires to cut off a fire's fuel supply. "Lighthouse Lives" by Marissa Moss explores how lighthouse keepers kept sailors safe. Before electricity, they made sure the light always burned. Moss describes several herotic keepers who risked their lives to guide sailors and to rescue people from deep, cold waters.
