Working on and organizing a National History Day project can be pretty intense. I found that a lot of my students were struggling with focusing their topics back onto the theme of Conflict and Compromise or with narrowing down a specific, defensible argument. This comes with a flowchart for organizing the thought process of breaking down a "broad topic" into a "narrow focus" and connecting that to Conflict & Compromise.

The full version provides leveled instructions for how to turn those thoughts into meaningful arguments. Level 1 provide explicit sentence starters, Level 2 provides an array of prompts and sparks for thinking, and Level 3 allows students to create an original prompt (like a Historian!) and work from there, addressing counterclaims and all. This process is broken down individually for the "main idea" of the thesis, as well as for the three subclaims (think DBQ style chicken-foot).
