This set of national park research flipbooks includes all 62 U.S. national parks, including the newest, White Sands National Park. Similar to graphic organizers, these activities are more hands-on, engaging, and interactive, and are a great way to integrate literacy into other subjects such as social studies and science. Students will learn about various aspects of each park as they complete their research including:

  • Definition of a national park
  • Location (including a mapping activity)
  • When the park was established
  • Size
  • What the park is famous for
  • History and historical people
  • Activities people can participate in
  • Change over time in the park
  • Flora (trees & flowers/plants)
  • Fauna (mammals, birds, fish, amphibians & reptiles, insects & spiders)
  • Physical features

The flip books are comprised of 7 panels across three pages. Each panels features specific topics for students to research, and space is provided for writing and drawing. Clear, easy-to-follow directions for printing, cutting, and assembling the flip books are included. This activity makes an especially great addition to 4th grade classrooms with the Every Kid in a Park program that gives free national parks passes to 4th graders and their families.

I have every intention of keeping this product up to date, but a blank flip book template is also included for any new national parks that may be established. This blank template could also be used for students to create their own national parks. These could be based on real locations in your community or state, or they could be completely made up by students.
