Description

What a great time to visit a favorite U.S. National Park! Students will be given a budget to travel to the state of the national park, stay in a hotel or campsite, and pay for the cost of meals. In this PBL unit, they can view a PowerPoint of popular parks to help in deciding which one to research.

This project can be completed in groups or individually. There are plenty of activities for differentiation. I did not give a budget. You can easily give your students a budget to spend on the project.

This PBL unit incorporates 21st Century skills with challenging, engaging, and creative activities. There are lots of opportunities for differentiation, cooperative learning, and technology integration.

IN THIS UNIT:

  • National Parks PowerPoint™– Discuss the different parks with students
  • Conservation President – President Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation efforts
  • I Live Here – Students can color their state and label the city where they live. Fill out the information below.
  • I Will Travel to Here – Students will color the state where they are visiting and complete the information.
  • I Wonder – Questions about the project that need to be answered during the research
  • I will Travel to Here – Visit websites for travel by airplane
  • I Will Travel to Here – Calculate gasoline costs if you would travel by car. (Great for higher students)
  • I Will Stay Here – Research and calculate hotel expenses.
  • I Will Eat Here – Research and calculate places to eat. (More advanced students can calculate for a family of 4 or do more with this activity; compare prices, etc.)
  • Places of Interest – Students can record other places to visit in the area. Some of these may have a fee to enter.

This PBL unit incorporates 21st Century skills with challenging, engaging, and creative activities. There are many opportunities for differentiation, cooperative learning, and technology integration. This real-world challenge requires students to use inquiry, critical thinking, and creative minds during the high-interest cross-curricular activities [math, social studies, ELA].

Teachers love this activity because it can easily be adapted for enrichment or gifted students in other grade levels.

Model with mathematics. Mathematically proficient students can apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. In early grades, this might be as simple as writing an addition equation to describe a situation. In middle grades, a student might apply proportional reasoning to plan a school event or analyze a problem in the community. By high school, a student might use geometry to solve a design problem or use a function to describe how one quantity of interest depends on another. Mathematically proficient students who can apply what they know are comfortable making assumptions and approximations to simplify a complicated situation, realizing that these may need revision later. They are able to identify important quantities in a practical situation and map their relationships using such tools as diagrams, two-way tables, graphs, flowcharts and formulas. They can analyze those relationships mathematically to draw conclusions. They routinely interpret their mathematical results in the context of the situation and reflect on whether the results make sense, possibly improving the model if it has not served its purpose.
