As part of the CCSS standards, students need to practice their speaking and presentation skills in front of a live audience. Research skills are also central to the Common Core, but the “old” research paper model is an ineffective way to challenge and engage students in their learning. For this project, students will “become” one of America’s Founding Father’s through both research and dramatic interpretation, leading to a deeper and more elaborate type of research. The entire process culminates in a “public viewing” where students pretend to be statues of their people, which come to life and talk when visitors “activate” them. We recently did this activity in place of a traditional written paper and the learning was deeper, more engaging, and more in line with the spirit of the common core! We also opened it up to parents and they were thrilled with the opportunity to see their students perform.
