This is a video guide handout for, the first "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" starring Nicholas Cage. In this movie, Benjamin Gates must follow a clue left in John Wilkes Booth's diary to prove his ancestor's innocence in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
2007 Rated PG 2 hours 4 minutes
My kids love watching this movie after we have studied the Declaration of Independence. While the movie is not what I'd really call 'educational' it is a way to connect what students have learned to something they've studied. I usually show the movie as a reward or on an early release day.
It has been my experience that if students do not have anything to do during a video, they do not pay attention. However, if you have them take notes or answer questions with written answers, they are too distracted. The purpose of a video should be to enhance learned material. I use these questions as a guide to make sure students are paying attention, but in a format that is simple enough that they are able to absorb (and enjoy!) the information in the video. All they have to do is listen and/or watch for the answer and circle/highlight it. This usually keeps them on their toes!
