First things first, the proper term to describe the decedents of tribes and clans from the American continent is Native American or Native. Do not use the term Indian when presenting any of the materials in this packet. The term Indian was used by Christopher Columbus to describe people he thought were from India; today the term Indian is still used to describe people from the country of India. When the term Indian is used to describe Native Americans, it is offensive because it is addressing the wrong population, it perpetuates colonial ideals by not distinguishing populations. Additionally, the term Indian has been used for over a century as a derogatory term. Simply, because you do not find the term Indian offensive does not mean that it is not an offensive term. It is more respectful to use the term Native American when talking about the population in general and it is best to use the specific tribes’ name when talking about the members of an area.
