This unit begins a semester-long course in American Literature. This unit contains linked CCR standards for Native American Literature prior to the arrival of the Europeans. Included in this packet is "Earth on Turtle's Back," "When Grizzlies Walked Upright," "from The Navajo Origin Legend," and "The Iroquois Constitution."
In my store is the Native American Oral Literature video and a note taking worksheet to be used with the video. The video offers an introduction to Native American oral literature and briefly introduces the unit.
Two formative assessments are included The first is a collaborative project that asks students to research the tribes associated with the above literature, and to find cultural details within the readings that show the tribes' cultural values and traditions. The second is a personal narrative assignment, The Cultural Narrative, that asks students to identify with their unique culture and to express that in both a written paper and a presentation.
