Do you know Debbie Miller's Reading with Meaning?! This activity was inspired by her use of poetry with making inferences! I created three Native American poems for the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo Native American Tribes. For each line of the poem, students had to determine the author’s meaning and at the end, they inferred which Native American tribe the poem was about and/or what was happening in the poem. Students also illustrated their visualization to support their inferences. This activity was a great way for students to use their background knowledge about Native Americans to make inferences!
This product includes three poems with objectives and spaces for a reading and social studies grade, one student sample, and a brief explanation of my classroom implementation.
This activity is aligned with Virginia's 2nd Grade Social Studies SOL 2.2 (interpret info about three major Native American groups) and Reading SOL 2.9f (make inferences).
