This handout includes major events in United States policy towards Native Americans from the Northwest Ordinance (1787) to the Dawes Act, one hundred years later. There is a brief summary of each event and then room for students to rewrite it in their own words and draw a quick picture to help them remember. After completing the chart, students can answer a few evaluative questions that get them to consider how and why policy has changed. Finally, there is space to begin planning an essay answering the question of whether or not these policies were justified. Intended for students who need scaffolding support with writing.
