I have used this unit successfully with grades three – five. When I have a combination 4th/5th (like right now), I love to use it for both grades at the same time. Fourth graders research a California tribe and fifth graders research a tribe from the rest of the United States.
The Native American Report is an exciting unit that kids will love! Besides giving students the opportunity to research using nonfiction text (Common Core focus), they are able to practice speaking in front of an audience, which is an excellent lifelong skill. The unit can also be expanded upon. For example, After finishing the projects, they can be used in partner groups to practice compare and contrast skills.
I love, love, love this unit and hope you do too!
