This graphic organizer was used during our unit on Native American tribes. After allowing students, in pairs, to choose from a list of tribes, students began choosing their resources and listing them in the graphic organizer. I gave them one fact sheet and the text book as two resources. Although students gathered more than 2 resources (to get the practice of finding relevant materials), students ultimately stuck to 2-3 resources to fill out the graphic organizer.
The graphic organizer includes clothing, food, shelter, customs and traditions and location and climate. Students are asked to think of at least 4 details for each section well as a topic sentence.
I found that having the details and topic sentence on the same graphic organizer gave students the opportunity to see the commonalities between the details to write their topic sentence (students turned the graphic organizer into Prezi presentations).
You can also have students cut out each separate graphic organizer and glue them onto a longer strip of construction paper to create their own totem poles (a Northwestern Indian tradition).
best of luck!
