Explore Native American cultures (and hit a ton of Common Core standards) through this integrated research project! Students will learn how to research, tackle nonfiction texts and online resources, take notes, determine valid resources, construct quality paragraphs, and work as a team, all while learning more about Native Americans!
This project includes a project overview, a list of tribes (and brief descriptions of each), a grading rubric, a note taking worksheet with research guiding questions, paragraph outlines, information book final draft page, and teacher notes.
I've used this with my students for years and it works as a great way to expand/extend knowledge from our Social Studies unit on Native Americans, explore research techniques, and solidify the structure of a quality paragraph. It also includes an artistic element!
Perfect for fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth graders, highly capable or gifted fourth graders, and remedial ninth graders. I use it with my fifth graders, but at a previous school, did it with sixth/seventh graders. The topics and guiding questions are open-ended enough that you could easily adapt the expectations and use it as a quick one or two session lesson in high school.
