My Native American unit is usually a long one, and in it, I like to incorporate the study of legends. Two hit two birds with one stone; I also add constellations when we study the sky in science, and voila – this Native American Star Legends Unit! It can be completed in one to two weeks, depending on what else you want to add. This file includes:
An intro to constellations PowerPoint
3 different Native American myths about the Big Dipper
A constellation creation sheet
A Venn diagram
I begin by introducing the concept of constellations and legends. Then, I read a star legend to the class and we identify the elements of legends that were present in the reading. The next two days, I assign groups of students to read a different legend (in this case, about the same constellation) and have them compare and contrast the three. Then, they spend Thursday and Friday creating a constellation and writing a legend to go with it.
