Native American studies fascinate and educate no matter what the age. Kids love to learn about fascinating tribes and peoples. What would enhance a native American study more than learning to draw some of the symbols of those intriguing cultures. Damon Reinagle utilizes basic, simple shapes to establish the ground work for drawing classic thunderbird icons. Through step by step instruction, students can successfully create these images for reports, posters or just for fun to paint or color in with oil pastels, crayons or colored pencils.
In this case we are using modeling clay as our medium of choice. This project teaches young artists about symmetry, balance, shape, color, proportion and drawing!
Utilizing these step by step drawings ala Damon Reinagle, author of DRAW ALIEN FANTASIES and DRAW MONSTERS, students can clearly see the connection between art and history. These historical images can be utilized to stimulate the creative juices of Kinders right on up through middle schoolers.
The examples illustrated here are from my Kindergarten art class.
