PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a presentation of twenty terms related to three Native American Legends. It can be combined with the handouts and used as the PowerPoint for the Day 1 lesson in the one week mini-unit found at this same site (described below). Each slide includes the word, its definition, a creative sentence and an illustration. There is a link embedded to a Quizlet.com activity. This lesson can be used independently but works better if combined with the mini-unit described below.

Big Questions: What is culture? Why explore multiculturalism?
Timeline:
Day 1: The mini unit begins with 20 vocabulary words. There is a vocabulary list, enrichment activities (including synonyms and a Quizlet.com link), and an assessment with an answer key. The assessment would probably be given at the conclusion of the week.
Day 2: Brother Eagle, Sister Sky; PowerPoint and book activities which include inferential questions and identifying simile/metaphor. These are questions that is similar to a question bank that can be used as an assessment piece or cut/pasted into websites such as Kahoot.it.com or Quizlet.com to create interactive games. There is an additional activity which could connect with p. 28 of “Legends of the Iroquois”, but the book is not necessary to complete the lesson.
Day 3: How Man Got Into the Moon; a short folktale about how the “face” on the moon was created. The handout/PowerPoint begin by reviewing the vocabulary; reading and re-reading the piece. It includes a graphic organizer in how to creatively review story elements. It also includes a “Ticket out the Door” which could serve as a summative assessment.
Day 4: The Origin of Fire; this lesson begins by reviewing vocabulary, compares two legends about the origin of fire, explains other phenomenon of this story and uses visual interpretation to conclude. There is a corresponding PowerPoint presentation and handout to accompany this.
Day 5: review vocabulary by using the synonyms worksheet, the website game at Quizlet.com, and formative assessment included in the Day 1 handouts. The assessment includes an answer key.
