Scientists believe people settled in North America over 15,000 years ago. Today, there are 574 American Indian Nations in the United States, speaking 150 different languages.

Hundreds of Native American words are part of our American English language. When you play the Photo & Vocabulary Match Game ~ Native American Words We Use , you will learn 18 of those words. With a little research, you can add more words to the game, using the Blank Image & Word Cards

Use the Game Cards to fill in the definitions for each word , using adjectives, context clues, and/or a dictionary.

Native American culture honored Nature in many different ways. One of their most colorful and artistic expressions was in the creation of their Animal Totems. I chose nine common North American animals images to include as choices for the SACRED ANIMAL TOTEM SAND PAINTING activity.

Another popular symbol of Native American culture is a Dream Catcher. As a gift to newborns, mothers and grandmothers would weave feathers and beads onto a willow branch circle. They, then, hung it over the cradle as a protection symbol. Directions for making your own Dream Catcher are part of this unit’s activities, too.

Included in this November's CLAMDiggers Unit are:

  • front & back covers for booklet use
  • a thematic literature list of trade books
  • a general lesson plan for reading comprehension of the reads
  • 4 hands-on interactive activities with instructions written on an independent upper elementary level

You can utilize this unit as:

  • whole group instruction
  • small group instruction
  • cooperative groups
  • center time activities
  • partner sharing
  • independent study
