Product Description
The Lakota Winter Counts Webquest and Project is a fun activity for students. They learn about wintercounts by exploring the following website through a webquest:

Click here to view the website.

A second assignment provides a guide to explore the following winter counts and allows students to write down key information on the following winter counts:

Flame’s Winter Count
Lone Dog
Long Soldier

After having students explore the website, the students create a simple winter count of their life. Students use one symbol or picture for each year of their life. Students are welcomed to use personal, family, or world events to help them complete their winter count. Any paper can work, but it looks great on large rollout paper or on 11 by 17 paper.

The webquest contains 14 questions and an answer key is included for the teacher. The guide has 3 questions and a directions sheet is also included. A QR code is included along with the traditional website links. I recommend using this activity as an introduction or conclusion activity related to Native Americans. This activity will take most students at least 1 to 2 class periods to complete depending on age and how much time a teacher wants for creative expression on the winter counts. Feel free to modify this activity if needed to fit the needs of your students.
