I think that it is important for young children to learn about the great culture of Native Americans. It is also important for young children to understand that not ALL Native Americans lived (and live) in the same way. Not ALL Native Americans lived in a tipi and hunted buffalo. This packet is written in general terms for young children. As children grow and mature, they will be able to handle more information. I have tried to write a unit that is both respectful to the Native American culture and simple enough for a 5-8 year old child to understand. Students will receive a glimpse of the life styles of Native Americans of the PAST through creation of a book using step by step drawing illustrations. A coloring book style is also included. A full color book with realistic photographs as well as Native American craft ideas with directions for how to create each one is also included. The crafts can be made with materials that are within a teacher's budget!
