This is a week long lesson of three activities based on a fictitious volcano that is possibly erupting. Your students are a team sent by the USGS to study the volcano's past eruptions in the first activity to create a timeline to predict future eruptions. The second activity has them monitoring current volcanic behavior while racing a clock to decide whether or not to evacuate the area. The third activity has them creating an evacuation preparedness plan and researching the technologies we use to mitigate damage caused by volcanic activity.. based on the NGSS: MS-ESS3-2. Analyze and interpret data on natural hazards to forecast future catastrophic events and inform the development of technologies to mitigate their effects.
