Natural Selection. In his is a hand-on Natural Selection activity and lab. Students color butterflies, cut them out and tape them in plain sight in the classroom. Students then "eat" as many butterflies as they can find in 1 minute. It's amazing that any butterflies will be left on the walls, but the ones that are left are mostly the ones camouflaged to their backgrounds! This shows students exactly how Natural Selection happens in nature. I liked to bring my class into the hall, start the 1 minute and let them enter the classroom all at once to begin "eating".
Included in this download is a lab report graphic organizer that scaffolds the Scientific Method, student direction cards and butterfly coloring sheets. An optional PowerPoint presentation that explains Natural Selection, Adaptation, Evolution and Mutation is also included but is not necessary to complete the activity and lab.
