This project based learning unit is a great way to explore plants and animals in an authentic way with students. In this PBL unit, students will use an adaptation of the creative problem solving process to identify problems in their own backyard/schoolyard. They will then discover how they can make a positive impact by acting as an ornithologist, entomologist, or botanist. Students will observe and document their environment, identify plants/animals, research to learn more about the plants/animals, and create a product (documentary, field guide, or presentation) to share with others. This detailed unit includes everything you need to get started including 12 days of lesson plans, a 15 page exploration journal for students, and a PPT presentation to help lead you through the PBL experience (including links for research, digging deeper, etc.). This unit can/has been adapted for gifted students in Kindergarten- regular ed/gifted students in third grade.
