As the students walk and explore, they are told to look for and collect objects that resemble letters of the alphabet and the counting numbers. The teacher will prepare a place for the students to place their discoveries. I used the parking lot surface and sidewalk chalk to make the letters and numbers.
I designed these nature walks to give fourth, fifth, and sixth graders field experience with the concepts being taught in Earth, Life, and Physical Science. My students were fortunate to have woods, trails, and a creek so near their school building that parent permission slips were not necessary. They are also good to use as an “icebreaker” to begin discussions about the “Big Questions” of Earth, Life, and Physical Science.
