Here is one the students enjoyed because they dropped samples into the water, in my case off a bridge into the creek. This was an opportunity to discover that different objects of the same size may have different or the same density.
I designed these nature walks to give fourth, fifth, and sixth graders field experience with the concepts being taught in Earth, Life, and Physical Science. My students were fortunate to have woods, trails, and a creek so near their school building that parent permission slips were not necessary. They are also good to use as an “icebreaker” to begin discussions about the “Big Questions” of Earth, Life, and Physical Science.
