Nature of Science: This file contains four of my most engaging and most impactful nature of science hands-on lessons. Two of the nature of science activities are labs in which students are testing models in an experiment. In the labs, the students test varying heights of a Dixie cup "boat" and see if height will affect how much mass it can carry. In the second lab, students are testing different types of cheap cup "boats" to see if material affect how much mass a boat will carry. The third activity is a modeling activity in which students must try to carry out the same procedures in their model as their teachers. The last activity is a detective activity, in which students must try to use clues to learn about what could have possibly happened.
Each activity has a student guide that prompts the student to critically think about the activity and explains how to do the activity.
Teacher notes are also included for each activity.
For these activities, you will need:
10 toilet paper rolls
20 arm lengths of yarn
10 paper clips
3 Dixie cups per group
1 clear plastic cup per group
1 styrafoam cup per group
$ 3-4 Dollars of Pennies
1 tub of water per group (I use plastic shoe boxes, but any tub will do.)
