I use this as a quick and easy visual while introducing rest to my students. First we read the rhythm and see what we hear on the cat. Once they figure out that there is no sound on the cat we think about the rhythms we know and see if we have a rhythm that makes no sound. Once they figure out that no, we don't know a rhythm with no sound, I introduce the concept of quarter rests and show them the second page!
This is also a great visual that students could use to play the pattern on instruments, or even just pointing to it with a pointer.
