Self assessing levels of knowledge is SO quick and easy by including a procedure that can be integrated daily (or even numerous times per day).
My students receive a copy of the self assessments the first week of school and it is integrated by just asking at different times in class for them to self assess their knowledge by holding up the number of fingers to corresponds with their current comfort level.
Once they get use to it, it becomes so second nature and sometimes they will ask for us to stop and assess (I teach high school level). It is FABULOUS for students to also see who they can peer tutor with also!

By also giving each student a rubric at the beginning of each unit (or week), students can document their self assessment for a variety of activities even when you are not asking for a response.
Another option is to record beginning, middle, and end of week knowledge. Yet, another is to have them record their level AND their score on assessments.
