Students need a global perspective in today's world, and that means gaining an understanding and appreciation for other cultures. This Power Point presentation of 130 beautiful slides introduces some of the better known holidays and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world during Christmas season.
Topics include: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Las Posadas, Nochebuena, Navidad, Día de los Inocentes, New Year, Three Kings Day, Candelaria, holiday foods, and various holiday customs. Photos are culturally relevant and were selected to highlight the realities of the culture and to break the stereotypes.
Comparisons are made between the culture of the Spanish-speaking world and that of North America. Questions are included to spark student thought and to encourage discussion and participation.
The final three slides include teacher information, rationale, standards, and suggestions for five different extension activities. Teachers can use the extensions to create a lesson that will get students deeply involved with the content and more aware of the similarities and differences between the Spanish-speaking world and their own culture.
This is a great activity for teachers of Spanish and teachers of social studies alike. The language of the Power Point is English.
