"Navidad" is set in Central California in the late 19th Century and is based on a true event, a pioneer tale from the mountains west of King City. Though not explicitly a Christmas story, its message is one of struggle and reconciliation. It's one of my Joaquin Murrieta stories, too, and can be used as an enrichment read for students who have finished "Black Maggie's Secret" or "Joaquin's Gold". It won 2nd place in the 2006 Arkansas Writers' Conference literary contest and was later published in "Award Winning Tales", available on Amazon. Please take a peek at the unit I prepared for this story. It's here on TPT: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Navidad-Short-Story-Unit-2867115 It's designed to help kids get through the story with both comprehension and enjoyment.
"Navidad"" won a prize in the 2020 Ageless Authors short story competition. Here's a sample of what the judges had to say: "Vivid descriptions that allow readers to visualize the characters, their settings and their experiences. This is a talented writer who successfully transports the reader to another time and place."
