In this 30 minute hands-on and imaginative activity, students will bring a new level to either the characters they are playing in a scene OR characters they are focusing on in a novel through this Near and Dear Characterization Activity.
This activity can be used with ANY piece of literature in ANY classroom where students are studying a character and want the delve deeper into their characterization. Students will create meaning towards a random object they are given which is supposed to be “near and dear” to their assigned character. Students will use their imagination and logical leaps to create a whole new side to their character that is uniquely theirs.
Note: The best way to experience this activity is through the use of a prop closet. If you do not have access to a prop closet, an alternative way to experience this would be to either have students bring a certain objects from home as homework OR pull pictures of various objects from the internet. However, it is best experienced if students can hold and manipulate the objects in their hands.
