This resource concentrates on the life of Nelson Mandela and includes differentiated texts as well as activities that can be done by all students or used for differentiation depending on the classroom situation.
It includes (all activities include an answer key):
-- 2 Research Activities: “Apartheid” and “Nelson Mandela: Freedom and Leadership”. Both activities include research, and students will likely need internet access. Information from websites could be printed and provided for students in the classroom but due to copyright restrictions I cannot include them in my resource. For the first activity, students answer guided questions - the second activity requires students to write their own summary of Mandela’s life after he was released from prison;
-- Informational Text (differentiated): The one-page text briefly covers Mandela’s early years but is mainly about his years as a political prisoner. The lower level reading is page numbered as “1a” and the higher level as “1”. The 1a reading also lacks a border around the text, to further differentiate it for the teacher. Vocabulary words for 1a are underlined, those for 1 are not underlined.
-- Comprehension Questions and Vocabulary: the questions provided for the passage are the same, however the vocabulary activity is different for page 1a and page 1.
-- Multiple choice quiz: ten questions with four choices each, suitable for both levels;
-- Time line diagram for Mandela’s life (probably more suitable for younger students); students can choose the years they wish to highlight, but an answer key is provided with a suggested timeline.
