Nelson Mandela was a famous civil rights activist and world leader. This article takes kids on a short journey through Nelson Mandela's life. It covers his birth in South Africa and his boyhood and how he received the Christian name of Nelson. It discusses where he went to school and his interest in African history and how he was raised a leader and counselor. The biography touches on how Mandela joined the African National Congress Youth and fought against Apartheid and how he organized strikes. He was eventually arrested and sent to prison for where he earned a law degree. He was released by President Willem de Klerk and Mandela continued his work to help black people. He eventually won the Nobel Peace Prize and was elected South Africa's first black president. Nelson Mandela used sports to unite the country and South Africa hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He was such an important world leader, July 18 was declared Mandela Day.
